The post War models of the Standard Triumph Company have got on in years and hopelessly outdated, Vanguard, Standard 10 or Mayflowers couldn't compare with its rivals and were not fit for the coming 60ties decade. The new house designer Michelotti tailoured a complete new design line after he had created the Herald 1959 and the Spitfire 1962 he worked on the "BARB" series, resulting in a fine upper middleclass limousine. Comparing with other limousines of those days he was up to date, independant suspension all round, overdrive, injection system were intereting features which many rivals didn't have in their portfolio, one exceptional rival also with all independant all round suspension was the BMW 1500/1600/1800/2000 series. stood for quick, comfortable limousines of the upper middleclass saloon with high safty factors, against his national rival - the Rover P6, which was launched at the same time with slightly better safety features but less agilty, that's why the Triumph was successful on the British Isles; on the continent because of the high exchange rate and the exotic status only with moderate success, not at least because of the continental rivals like BMW, OPEL, MERCEDES or similar.
Presented 1963 the Big Six (in Austria nick named "Coati") was quickley accepted, because trusty, strong, smooth engine, 4 doors, comfortable ride it found buyers among buisiness people, managers and attorneys. Also public services like firebrigade commands, police a.s.o. 1968 the 2,5 Pi was launched to match with the new strong BMW limosines and the Rover P6 V8, producing 132 hp with a prestigefull injection system.
the Stag was under development, the TR5 Pi was on the way and the 2,5 Pi saloon just launched, as the facelifting of the Big Six was found necessary and so Michelotti made some changes to the front, the rear and the interior. He extended the tail a bit, made a new rear light panel, smoothed the bonnet, straightened the radiator grille and integrated the 4 headlamps, influenced by the STAG.dashboard was also straightened and had a continuous wooden board, embedded instruments, the door cappings had remained in wood like at the Mk1 model.Lucas Injection system had been reworked to Mk2 but still suffered from unreliability, just as in the TR series. that's why Triumph switched to a twin carburettor system with the second facelift 1974 (2000TC,2500TC), 1975 a further little facelift followed with overdrive as standard, the Pi camshaft for better performance (2500 S) and Stag style wheels as standard.last Big Six was removed from the portfolio.
